Shedding pounds

This post does not refer to the pounds one normally thinks of, but pounds of extra stuff in my life.  My wonderful best friend Liz made me realize today that I really only blog about my children and occasionally Bryan, but nothing about the goings on in the mind of Megan.

I realized something today….I love getting rid of things.  Well, I am glad once they are gone, but sometimes have a hard time letting go.  Clothes for example, I love to clean out the closet and have pile of things to donate, but for some reason my mind races as I drop off the bag of clothes I know I will not miss and think…what if I need something in there four months down the road…but once I let it leave the grasp of my little hand it feels so good! This goes for many things….finishing off a bottle of cleaner so I can finally throw away the bottle, using the last drop of shampoo, finally using all of the olive oil in the ginormous bottle I bought months ago, taking out a very full bag of garbage, moving and getting rid of things we never use or need, and even removing that nice film of dirt over the kitchen floor and back behind the flour canister that gets cleaned with the deep cleanings.

These are pounds I love to shed – extra pounds of “stuff” in the house. Yes, I do love to open that new bottle of shampoo and to finally buy a new shirt, but something just gets me when I get to de-clutter and then re-organize all over again. Strange, maybe…but I enjoy it!

Ahhh, same here!I'm actually going to start going through my closet this weekend! Now only if I could get Johann to take on that mentality--he checks the bags of things I take to donate and routinely takes back two or three things he hasn't used for years...then continues not to use them for year! ha!

I know what you mean Megan. I feel the same way about opening up a new package or bottle of something. Clothes however, I am always sad to part with, even if I know I will never fit in them again. Sigh. Maybe its because shopping for me isn't nearly as fun as shopping for the kids. :)

I always have such anxiety getting rid of clothes! I think it's because there have been times when I really wanted to wear something, but had gotten rid of it! I hate that feeling!

Although I guess that comes along with being a pack rat!

I am the same way except I'm always excited to get rid of stuff...probably because it's a good excuse to get new stuff the next month =)

That is so funny, Megan. My roommate is exactly the same... especially when she is stressed! I love to clean and organize too, but my mind works the opposite-- how long can I make this last, how can I make this stretch, how can I use this in another outfit? It's like I'm in constant survival mode. Granted, I throw away a lot of stuff. I'm DEFINITELY not a pack rat, but I like to make things last. On the other hand, when it comes to the fridge, I love to throw stuff away!!

Me too!!! I love getting rid of stuff. I always have days where I a major cleaning and organizing of my room and get rid of bags of stuff. I do the same thing a month or so later and again - bags of stuff. Where does it all come from???

PS Liz is right - sometimes we get so focused on our loved ones that we forget about ourselves. I for one would love to hear more about Megan :)
